Do you often find yourself dwelling on past mistakes? Do you get embarrassed of thinking how you acted in a certain situation long after it was over? You might be living in the past.
Many people find it difficult to let go of the past and tend to hold onto scenarios, people, acts or mistakes. It’s human nature to rethink acts, especially the negative ones.
It leads to over thinking and in turn causes issues with thinking clearly, problem-solving, mood, maintaining relationships or being social. Being stuck in the past hampers you from living your life in the present. You don’t make the most of what’s happening around you, hence feel like something is constantly missing.
Here are some ways you can free yourself from the past:
1. Acknowledge
Your Feelings
Do not bottle up their feelings or avoid addressing difficult memories. Avoiding them will hamper your personal growth. Let your feeling out, process them, and get comfortable around them. In case of traumatic feeling, seek someone you trust or look for professional help.
2. Address Unresolved Problems
Communication is key. Communicate with people who are still in your life to resolve any issues between you. Apologize to people you need to. Correct the mistakes you need to. Taking the first step is all that matters.
3. Focus on things that you can control
Try to let go of what you can’t change, rather focus on what you can. Work on yourself, work with yourself and be the best version of yourself.
4. Forgive Yourself and Others
It is only human to make mistakes. No one out there is perfect. It doesn’t make one a bad person, or a failure. Making mistakes is how we learn and grow as people. Forgiving frees you to move forward.
5. Give Yourself
Closure
6. Life Lessons
Even
negative experiences and mistakes can have an upside. They can teach us what to
avoid, what we don’t want to do, and how to improve our life moving forward. Try
to look for the lessons from the past, reinforce them and shape your shape
using them.
7. Be Mindful
Practice meditation, visualization, breathing exercises, mindful eating and mindful movement.
8. Make the Present Count
Do things that make you happy and surround yourself with positive people. Treat people as you would want to be treated and act in ways that you are proud of. Prioritize your health, both physical and mental.
9. Be Confident and Patient
Have
positive affirmations. Have new experiences and step outside of your comfort
zone. Surround yourself with people who build you up. Keep trying your best and
be patient with yourself, and you’ll get there. Be kind and gentle with
yourself along the way.
The journey to stop living in the past isn’t linear. You might have setbacks and you might struggle at times, but that is completely valid. One step at a time. Don’t miss out on precious moments because you’re so busy dwelling on memories. Life has so much to offer!
